Prussia to be resurrected?

The social affairs minister of the German federal state of Brandenburg has suggested that his state be reunited with the federal state of Berlin and that the new entity be called ,,Prussia". The suggestion has caused a stir in Germany.

Even though the plan to merge the two states is an old one, and is due to be submitted to a referendum in 2006, few had envisaged the new state having this name. Many have reacted against the choice of the name Prussia. This is not only because Prussia was formally dissolved as a political unit after the war but also because the old state of Prussia used to be include Westphalia, the Rhineland and Pomerania (Poland).
