BERLIN/MAGDEBURG |

BERLIN/MAGDEBURG (Own report) - The medieval, Europe-wide German Reich is a valid model for the union of European countries today. So says the Berlin State Minister for Culture, Bernd Neumann. According to him, the memory of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation reveals "an inner historical consistency" with the founding and steady expansion of the European Union. These remarks are a preparation for the festivities in Berlin for the fiftieth anniversary of the European Economic Community (EEC), to which the Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has invited the German Pope, Joseph Ratzinger. Ratzinger is a committed supporter of the "Imperial Ideal" (Reichsidee) and is to speak on the "spiritual foundations" of Europe in the German capital. This government offensive to revitalise the Imperial Ideal will underline the German leadership of the EU and confirm fears in France, Great Britain and almost all the states of eastern Europe. Sections of the German elites are warning against an all-too-public assertion of German hegemony. more…

LEVERKUSEN/NEW DELHI/SHANGHAI (Own report) - The Bayer Corporation of Germany is pushing its expansion into Asia with the sales of highly dangerous pesticides and is thereby accepting that the regional rural population could be seriously contaminated. As Malaysian specialists have been criticizing, Bayer is offering to India and other Asian states pesticides that the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies as Class I ("extremely hazardous"/"highly hazardous"), even though the export and use of these chemicals run contrary to the norms of the United Nations' (FAO Code of Conduct) and can be deadly to humans. In India, Bayer, one of the largest German chemistry enterprises, is the agrochemical market leader. Bayer considers India to be one of the most promising markets in the Asia-Pacific region, where the company seeks to appreciably increase its business volume. Bayer achieves already approximately 16 percent of its worldwide total revenue and makes its largest foreign investments in the region. more…

BERLIN/PARIS/ANKARA/WASHINGTON | | italienfrankreich

BERLIN/PARIS/ANKARA/WASHINGTON (Own report) - In a catalogue of recommendations ("Make Europe work!") for the upcoming German EU Council Presidency, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) is demanding, that Brussels concentrate its financial planning on the interests of core-European enterprises and the reduction of subsidies for the poverty stricken regions on the borders of the EU. As one reads in the recommendations, the "misconceived" EU agricultural policy has to be corrected and the EU's eastward expansion should proceed "with as few complications as possible." Among the BDI's declared goals is the protection of Germany's leading economic role in East, and Southeast Europe. At the same time, the BDI is demanding that conditions be improved for German businesses in the global competition with the USA, Japan and China. These plans, that Brussels is expected to carry out unobstructed, are in direct contradiction to important French interests. If these demands are met, the intra-European balance of power will shift in favor of German hegemony. more…

BERLIN/TEL AVIV/BEIRUT/DAMASCUS (Own report) - Under the pretext of a peace policy ("Israel's right of existence"), Berlin is urging the deployment of German naval and police units in the Middle East. The expedition corps currently being prepared is supposed to maintain the Israeli imposed embargo measures along the Lebanese coast and occupy the bombarded roads leading to Syria. The deployment of German armed forces (Bundeswehr) was explicitly endorsed by the Israeli war cabinet. Because of its long-standing relationship with West Germany, in the arms trade and military cooperation, Tel Aviv sees no problem in this deployment, considering it to be absolutely reliable. This bellicose alliance complements the superb business relations of the German arms industry with Arab states and yields additional profits: by granting Israel special terms and using political exaggerations ("protecting Jews"), Berlin protects itself against restitution demands reaching hundreds of billons. more…

BEIRUT/BERLIN | | libanon

BEIRUT/BERLIN (Own report) - Even before units of the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) are deployed in the Middle East, Lebanese critics are warning of a new civil war. Even a German military intervention "will not be able to neutralize" the "explosive cocktail" of western, Arab and Iranian interests, anticipates the history professor, Abdel Abdel-Raouf Sinno, in Beirut during a discussion with german-foreign-policy.com. As various scenarios are being circulated in Berlin, as to which branches of the Bundeswehr will intervene in Lebanon, Prof. Sinno refers to the ongoing French-German rivalry, that has affected the eastern Mediterranean, since German enterprises began to massively expand into the area. In the "Greater Middle East", the US project of an Arab colony for resources, inter-western contradictions are unfolding and leading to a heightened destabilization of the entire region. more…

BERLIN/BRUSSELS/DAKAR/TRIPOLI | | libyenspanienitalien

BERLIN/BRUSSELS/DAKAR/TRIPOLI (Own report) - The escalating hunt for refugees along the coasts of Africa, with German participation, is encountering resistance. The governments of Senegal and Libya, indicating inhumane practices by the European states, are refusing to place their territorial waters at the disposal of EU "border commandos". Despite the lack of an accord with Senegal, EU border control circles announced on Wednesday, Aug. 9, that they were dispatching a patrol boat to the territorial waters off the coast of Dakar - an open affront to this West African nation. Frontex, the EU border control agency, which is steering the project, is also active, in the meantime, on the Italian island, Lampedusa, and on Malta. Recently the first rebellions in a European refugee camp occurred on Malta. As EU interior commissioner Franco Frattini confirms, Berlin expresses "great interest" in the development of the Frontex special forces (the "Rapid Border Intervention Teams") and has made "an extraordinarily generous offer concerning its participation". more…

BERLIN |

BERLIN (Own report) - Record profits in the billions strengthen the position of German enterprises in their global expansion. This was learned from analyses and enterprise balance sheets, that were recently made public. According to expert reports, it is to be expected that in the next 18 months, numerous foreign companies, particularly in Europe, will be taken over by their German competitors. The German economic expansion is supported by new tax privileges and accompanied by additional financial burdens on private households valued at approximately 40 billion Euros. Also the, far below the EU average, wage increases assist in the capitalization of world-wide takeover projects. These measures pay off: over the past ten years German enterprises were able to increase their share of the Euro-zone market by more than one-quarter and by nearly double in comparison to their French rivals. This is two-and-one-half times more than that of the Italian economy. more…
