MUNICH/LONDON A German corporation is seen as the leading contender for a contract, worth billions, from the British Ministry of Defense. London plans to announce ,,shortly"which company will be awarded the contract for approximately 8,000 military transport vehicles. Politically, the order which is valued at roughly 3 billion Pounds (4.5 billion Euro), is considered especially prestigious. Since the middle of the 70s it is Europe's biggest military truck order. The British defense ministry had already awarded two major contracts to the German-French conglomerate EADS. Due to its increased weapons purchases on the European continent, Great Britain is being drawn more and more into the fold of the EU armaments program. more…

MUNICH/TORONTO (Own report) |

MUNICH/TORONTO (Own report) On Tuesday the German film ,,The Downfall"receives its international premiere at the Toronto film festival. This evening-long feature film portrays the last days of the late German Reich Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, in the ,,Fuehrer Bunker"in Berlin. According to the German liberal press, ,,a tragedy"occurred there in 1945 which evokes ,,sympathy"for this new depiction of Hitler; the press compares this mass murderer with heroic figures of German history. Publicly funded television (ARD 1st Programme) part-financed the production with millions of euros and will show the feature film on prime-time TV. The German premiere will take place a few days before two important elections in which neo-Nazis and right wing extremists are already predicted to take up to nine per cent of the vote. ARD 1st Programme was successful in promoting a mass assault on the cinemas by thorough publicity in TV reports. Strong protests were announced against this historical revision by ARD through the media. more…

GUNSBACH/STRASBOURG (Own Report) |

GUNSBACH/STRASBOURG (Own Report) This Sunday, the ,,Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Stiftung" in Gunsbach (France) presents its annual ,,Albert-Schweitzer Preis" (prize). The foundation with that quasi-official sounding name is part of the network of a German political imperium which had been established by Alfred Toepfer, a Hamburg businessman. Toepfer had been a promoter of the SS and a Nazi secret service specialist working for the destruction of Germany's neighboring states into ethnic ,,regions." During the German expansion efforts, he earned special merits for subversive activities in ,,Germanizing" the Alsace. Several historians and publicists have called for protests because of current Toepfer activities in Alsace. A faction of the Green/European Free Alliance in the EU parliament also attempts new advances in France's regionalization. more…
