Likewise, the military experts of the German opposition argue for a speedy integration into the alliance system. The goal is ,,bringing Turkey closer to the European Union", in order to use that country as an outpost in approaching the Islamic world ( ,,war against international terrorism") and as a geo-strategic beachhead into Asia. According to Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who had just visited Istanbul, Turkey's future EU membership is ,,almost more important than a rocket defense system." more…

BERLIN/BRUSSELS A high-ranking social democrat demands an increase in military spending and a further reduction of support for civilian programs within the EU. BERLIN/BEIJING | | china

BERLIN/BEIJING German foreign policy towards the People's Republic of China (PRC) pursues the goal to enter into an informal alliance with China, with the assistance of the EU, in order to contain the super power, the USA. Since the current Chinese government is considered to be unpredictable and unreliable, Berlin simultaneously, in cooperation with the USA, uses external and internal pressures on the self confident potential rival. German military and government consultants increasingly consider the use of force in the region, because economic and political instruments don't seem to be sufficient to achieve ,,real European influence in the Asia-Pacific region." more…
