Stew ,,Berlin"

LONDON The president of the Czech Republic warns his citizens and the European public of the EU constitutional draft. Vaclav Klaus writes that the document is a result of politics, which is ,,done behind the back of the European public"and that it extinguishes the sovereignty of European states. Contradicting Klaus, the Czech prime minister pleads in favor of the present EU constitutional draft, because anything else ,,does not correspond to Germany's importance". According to Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla, the Czech Republic should attune itself to the history of the Middle Ages when ,,Boehmen (Bohemia)"belonged to the Empire of Charles IV.

The Czech Social Democrat is quoted as saying: ,,We experienced the best times during the era of Charles IV when we were integrated into the most developed part of Europe."The German Emperor, Charles IV lived in the 14th Century.

Dependence

In the 21st century, Prague should join Germany and should remember recent history with a fresh point of view, according to Spidla. The Czech prime minister points out that he has discovered in his friend, the German chancellor, a new ,,generation of Germans who, in no way, are still connected with the war". 1)The German press finds 2)that Spidla's close relationship with Berlin can be better explained with economic data than with historical revelations. ,,The Czech economy"is ,,highly dependent on the German one"; Spidla and others adapt to this situation, as indicated by Czech personnel involved with Berlin's economic expansion.

Variations

In order to avoid a complete sale of the country to German enterprises, another Czech political faction sets its stake on cross-over alliances with Berlin's competition in London and Washington. The most prominent member of the conservative group is the Czech president, Klaus, who is not afraid to publicly judge the policies of the social-democratic Spidla government, especially its pro-German Foreign Ministry. 3)Alluding to Berlin, Klaus warns of a German-style standardization of Europe ( ,,uniform European eintopf"- or stew).

Thus the constellation of the 1930s, when Czech policies were subject to changing economic factions, whose interests were reversed by switches between Berlin and London, repeat themselves. Neither of the alliances was able to save the CSR; the Munich agreement abandoned her for final plundering. 4)
